Sports Collectors Digest

Just got my Sports Collectors Digest (SCD) in the mail today. I have been an on again off again subscriber for many years. Although the publication is quite biased and a bit amateurish I look forward to getting each issue as it is one of the few printed publications dedicated to Sports Memorabilia Collecting. The internet, with its ease of trade, has helped true collectors but crushed the hobby. The hobby is not pure, but what is ? Greed is a centuries old vice. It cannot be changed. Publications like SCD should stop voicing why business is gone away. Negativity is infectious.
SCD is an institution and has a responsibility to carry the torch. Promote the hobby. Tell the truth. Focus on the positive and report the negative. Kids do not collect, but few adults do as well. SCD needs to get the heads of the hobby on their side. Work together. Promote together. The writers at SCD should have full time positions with real benefits. Topps, UD, Panini, Steiner, MLB have an obligation to advertise in the periodical. The hobby helps the sport. Good marketing is a mix. And good companies know that.Michael Eisner & Bud Selig, please pay attention.

Cesar Cedeno Game Used Bat

When I was younger, I always had a favorite player in the American League (Carlton Fisk) and the National League (Cesar Cedeno). I loved the style of Cedeno's play and new if he played in a smaller park, his homeruns totals would be far greater. Pete Rose gave him a nice resurrection to his career in Cincinnati. I always followed Cedeno, from Houston to Cinci to St Louis and ending with the Dodgers.
When I saw this game used bat appear on a recent aucion, I had to pick it up for my personal collection.

2007 Red Sox Team Signed Game Used Baseball 2007

Added this unique baseball to the  Fenway Collection recently. The Boston Red Sox didn't make their fans wait another 86 years for the team's latest World Series Championship. Rather, Boston claimed their second Championship in four years by beating the Colorado Rockies, and they did so in style, as the Sox swept the Rockies four games to none during the 2007 World Series. Those that signed include; Luis Alicea (Coach), Alex Cora, Manny Delcarmen, Jacoby Ellsbury, John Farrell (Coach), Eric Hinske, Jon Lester, Javier Lopez, Mike Lowell, Julio Lugo, Dave Magadan (Coach), Doug Mirabelli, Jonathan Papelbon, Dustin Pedroia, Manny Ramirez, Kyle Snyder, Mike Timlin, Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, Jason Varitek, Josh Beckett, Terry Francona & Curt Schilling. Added a nice piece to the Fenway Collection the other day. I purchased a hand signed MLB Authenticated baseball signed by MVP All Star Catcher Minnesota Twins - Joe Mauer.
MLB is THE Authenticator in the memorabilia. No objective opinions, just certified authentic.
MLB Authentication Program Below is an advertisement.

Introduction

The Major League Baseball Authentication Program is the first league-wide memorabilia authentication initiative in professional sports. Since its launch in 2001, it has become the industry standard for autographed and game-used sports memorabilia authentication.
Designed to distinguish officially authenticated MLB memorabilia from other items on the market, the program combines an objective third-party authentication system that guarantees genuine memorabilia for all MLB fans.

Authentication

Major League Baseball uses a third party authenticator at each and every game, who witnesses all items that received a signature or that were removed from the field. Every item, once witnessed, will receive a sequentially numbered, tamper-proof hologram created by OpSec, U.S. to easily identify its Major League Baseball authenticity.

Posting on MLB.com

Once fans receive the piece of memorabilia, they can trace their item using the new, rectangular official authentication numbered hologram through MLB.com. This easy reference enables fans to easily obtain and verify all of the details surrounding their new item.

Since its inception in 2001, Major League Baseball Authentication Program has certified over 3,000,000 items, allowing fans to ensure their memorabilia is a 100% genuine piece of their favorite pastime. It's easy to get the real goods - just check for the official seal of authentication.

Assignment of a Unique ID Number

Once witnessed, every authenticated item is affixed with a tamper-proof hologram created by OpSec, U.S. to identify its authenticity.

Tim Wakefield - An Asset to the Community

Tim Wakefield has not only proved himself on the field as an All Star and World Series Champion, but also as a pillar of the community. His work with Pitching in For Kids and the Franciscan Children's Hospital has been amazing.
With the Red Sox boasting one of the strongest and deepest starting rotations in baseball, veteran Tim Wakefield, who has been with the organization longer than anyone on the roster, is hearing familiar questions about his role. But Wakefield made it clear he sees himself as a full-time starter in comments to the Boston Herald.
This unique collage comes with actual game used dirt from Fenway Park. This keepsake memasures approximately 11x14 and comes complete with a Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity.

Fisk Goes After McGwire

Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk voiced his opinion on Mark McGwire and PED's and steroids.
"That's a crock," Fisk said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune. "There's a reason they call it performance-enhancing drugs. That's what it does -- performance enhancement. You can be good, but it's going to make you better. You can be average, but it is going to make you good. If you are below average, it is going to make you average. Some guys who went that route got their five-year, $35 million contracts and now are off into the sunset somewhere. Because once they can't use [steroids] anymore, they can't play anymore. "
While Fisk will always have a solid following in the memorabilia world, the jury remains out on Mark McGwire.

Papelbon Avoids Arbitration - Stock Goes Up

The Boston Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon came to terms on a one-year contract, the team announced Tuesday night. The deal, which means the Red Sox and Papelbon will avoid arbitration for the second straight offseason, has a base salary of $9.35 million with incentives that could make it worth more than $9.5 million, according to an industry source. In addition to the base salary, Papelbon will receive a $50,000 bonus if he finishes 60 games (he finished 59 last season). The deal also includes standard incentives for MVP, Cy Young, All-Star Game and so on.
His memorabilia plummeted in value after his blown save in the ALDS 2009. Now that he remains on the Sox, autographed baseballs are back in the $150 range.
